Master Soo Dong Lee

Korean Royal Costume Designer

Each year KACAF recreates the pageantry of the Choson Dynasty royal court through a fashion show featuring the royal designs of Master Soo Dong Lee.

During the Choson Dynasty (1392–1910) symbols representing the wearer’s rank began appearing on  the hem of clothing. The color gold was reserved for royalty throughout Korean history. A dragon represented an empress, and a phoenix represented a queen. Princesses and royal concubines wore floral patterns. High ranking court officials wore clouds and cranes.

Initially trained as a dancer Soo Dong  Lee has been a costume designer for over thirty years, In Sorabol Art College he majored in dance. After  finishing the military service he joined the Cultural Exchange Center between Korea and Japan as a  dancer for ten years. Seeing many types of dress in these advanced cultures his sense of beauty grew and he learned the harmony and beauty of costumes for opera, musicals, and plays.

Master Soo has toured to Europe, Asia, the Middle East and in the Americas and has received numerous awards  including being designated a Korean Cultural Assets in 2004.
